Lake Hotel Killarney Survives Worst Ever Flooding

DAYS OF INTENSIVE LABOUR AND A STRONG TEAM EFFORT HAVE SAVED THE LAKE HOTEL FROM KILLARNEY’S HIGHEST FLOOD LEVELS RECORDED IN DECADES.

An unprecedented rise in water levels together with relentless rainfall has caused havoc on the grounds of one of Killarney’s oldest and best known hotels. Owners and colleagues at The Lake Hotel worked tirelessly to hold back the waters of the Killarney Lakes. Earth moving equipment and pumps were brought in while hundreds of sand bags were filled, in blustery conditions, in order to barricade the well known landmark from the rising waters.

Director and General Manager Niall Huggard was all too aware of the devastating impact a long term closure would have had on his team of employees, particularly during the uncertain economic times. However the team worked together under tough climatic conditions to successfully hold the waters at bay and prevent any structural or cosmetic damage to the 131 bedroom hotel.

It came as a huge relief that all damage created by the flooding was external. “While there is certainly a great deal of work to be done on the surrounding property, we are extremely grateful that the hotel building suffered no water damage and we will be welcoming our guests back in January” said Mr Huggard. “The level of support and dedication shown by our team at The Lake Hotel was unequivocal and we would also like to thank all the members of our community who offered their support and services during these difficult few days.” he added.

Breda Healy, Front Office Manager, said “The phones have not stopped ringing. Locals and regular guests are eager for an update and to offer support. We’ve even noticed an increase in voucher sales and website hits, which was unexpected. The flooding has created a huge amount of interest and I think people are just relieved to hear that the hotel is not damaged and that their annual visits to us will not be effected.”

Members of the community and those familiar with the well known property are keeping a close eye on activities by logging onto the website. The Lake Hotel offers two live webcams, which reveal up to date streaming of the big clean up which is now underway. Webcam links can be found on www.lakehotel.com
