  CASTLE History

From the window of the Lake Hotel can be seen the ruins of a medieval Castle built on a rocky promontory within the grounds.  It is seen on the eastern shore of Loch Lein, or the Lower Lake, and gives its name to that portion known as the "Bay of Castlelough".

" THE LAST KING "

From here Donal MacCarthy
ruled the two Munsters
as Titular King of Desmond.
He is reputed to have been extravagant and had a fondness for drink. He was a wise and strong leader of Desmond in a difficult era and protected his territory with diplomacy rather than force.

History of the Hotel

Hilda Huggard and Hotels in Ireland
HILDA FRANCES HUGGARD
1916 - 2001

The Lake Hotel, built in 1820, still exhibits the original elegant lounges, with open log fires.  In 1861, the Lake Hotel hosted Queen Victoria of England during her stay in Ireland. In recent times the hotel was owned by the families, Cotter to Coffey then Morrough, Bernard and Courtney. In 1897 it was purchased by Mr. Hillard of Killarney and in 1940 it was purchased by Martin and Mary Huggard of Waterville, Who were also presented with Ashford Castle in Cong, Co Mayo by the Irish Government to restore the Castle to A top quality Hotel which was done under the guidance of Hilda's brother Noel . Hilda had learned her Trade from the best, who were also Directors with Bord Failte, Noel and Hildas mother Mary. Known the four corners of the Earth for her hospitality service and friendly welcome, Hilda passes on the Huggard traditions and renowned hospitality to her nephews,
Tony, Coleman, Niall and Joe who are actively
involved in the Hotel to the present day.
And to many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces who are also carrying the Huggard tradition in tourism in Ireland today.

The Hotel has recently been refurbished
and has kept its
"Old World Charm".
